Decorating Front Porch Urns For Christmas

The only shopping I want to do Thanksgiving weekend is to hit the local nursery to gather materials to create some gorgeous Christmas urns.  Decorated planters for the holidays add a festive elegance to the entryway and say welcome to your holiday guests.

I have two urns that flank my front steps.  I love that you can be creative and change it up every year.   Sometimes you are at the mercy of your local nursery and what greenery and other  materials are in stock.   You may even find greenery and branches that you can use in your own back yard.

Following is a collection of beautiful winter planters that will inspire you for your holiday decorating.

Gorgeous Christmas Urns with Dogwood Branches

One year I was lucky enough to find yellow dogwood branches similar to those in the picture below.   I like adding branches for height.  The yellow added a nice contrast to the rich evergreens.

Christmas Bulbs Add Sparkle to Your Holiday Urn

You can add some glam to your urns with Christmas Bulbs.  I love the color combination of the blue bulbs with the magnolia leaves.

Christmas Urns with Kale and Pine Cones

For something different, I like the combination of the green kale and skinny pine cones.  The arrangement suits the gray urn and would be a welcome sight on any porch.

White Birch Christmas Planter

Take a lesson from the professionals.  These planters are beautiful and I especially love the birch branches.

Did you notice the evergreen garland at the base of the steps.  Such an elegant touch, but only for those in the south.  It wouldn't work with our snowfall up north!

Step by Step Tutorial

For those of you who like step-by-step directions, this is a great tutorial at 5th & State.   You can start with a miniature spruce tree and accessorize your planter as shown below.

When I use red berries in my planters, I go for the fake ones!  The real ones just can't handle the Midwest winters!  The fake ones look just as great as the real and can be found at Michael's and other craft stores.  Save the real berries for indoor arrangements.

Another great combination of natural materials used in this holiday planter.

A Trip to the Grocer for Fruit Accessories

Fruit in Christmas Urns

After your visit to your local nursery and a walk through your yard, think about other items you can add to your arrangements.   It can be as simple as a trip to your local grocer for fruit.  Select fruit rich in color such as pomegranates, pears, oranges, apples, lemons and limes.

It's time to get creative!  What do you like to add to make your gorgeous Christmas urns?
